Census for Lower Canada, 1831 now available online

Library and Archives Canada is pleased to announce that the Census for Lower Canada, 1831 database is now available online. The Census for Lower Canada, 1831 is partly nominal and therefore only contains the names of heads of family, their occupation, and the number of residents for each family.

Users can search this new database by the name of heads of family, as well as by geographical information such as district and sub-district names.

  1. I am wondering who or which organization was responsible for this indexing, as for the Census of Lower Canada, 1825, and the “coming soon” LAC index to the Census of Canada East and Canada West for 1842 ? It’s always important to give credit, of course, but researchers like to know about the indexing for practical reasons. And FamilySearch.org has offered these with indexes for some time. I wonder too if the revised information for the Ontario portion of the 1871 Census came from its originator, the Ontario Genealogical Society or ?

    • The indexes for the 1825, 1831 and 1842 census are the results of a partnership with FamilySearch. Credits are always provided in the Search Help page of each database. Regarding the index for 1871 census for Ontario, it was mainly a standardization of district and district names. The nominal information was not revised.
