I think you’ll find those are not medals – they are crucifixes (probably engraved on spheres that give the impression of medals) on ribbons round the girls’ necks and they are the pupils at a convent school. I went to one, myself… (albeit not at that date – or I’d be VERY old!) that’s why I recognise it.
